How To Deep Clean After A Norovirus School Outbreak Part 2

Following on from the previous article, How to Deep Clean After a Norovirus School Outbreak Part 1, we discuss the steps to undertake during and following an outbreak in communal areas.

Cleaning Chemicals for use in treating a viral outbreak

Step by step guide to cleaning during an outbreak

A vigorous cleaning regime must be carried out. This should occur at least twice a day as a minimum during the outbreak using clean, disposable cloths, dedicated colour-coded mops/mop buckets for toilet areas and appropriate cleaning chemicals for use in communal areas.

It is not recommended to vacuum clean carpets or buff floors during an outbreak, as these actions have the potential to spread the virus.

Washrooms

  • Step 1: Wash hands, put on gloves and other protective wear if required. Display warning signs.
  • Step 2: Flush toilet or urinal. Force water around S bend with the toilet brush. Apply Jangro Perfumed Toilet Cleaner undiluted and leave for a few minutes. Flush with clean water before disinfecting.
  • Step 3: Spray Jangro Foaming Bactericidal Cleaner around the exterior bowl, ledges, shelves, door handles and cistern handle and wipe with a clean, damp cloth. Dispose of this cloth.
  • Step 4: Using another disposable cloth, clean the basin with Jangro Foaming Bactericidal Cleaner first and then clean the lavatory seat.
  • Step 5: Clean any buckets used for cleaning after use with the Jangro Foaming Bactericidal Cleaner, dry it and store inverted on a rack.
  • Step 6: Mop the floor with Jangro Foaming Bactericidal Cleaner and launder the mop head after use. Ensure that all surfaces are dry before anyone uses the lavatory.

Communal areas

Clean frequently touched surfaces with Jangro Multi-Purpose Cleaner and rinse to remove any organic matter before disinfecting with the Jangro Cleaner Disinfectant
  • Step 1: Wash hands, put on gloves and other protective wear if required. Display warning signs.
  • Step 2: Using a dampened disposable cloth with Jangro Cleaner Disinfectant, begin cleaning surfaces, changing cloths and solution as they become soiled. Work top-down, e.g. high ledges, furniture and fittings etc.
  • Step 3: Using a colour-coded mop head and handle, immerse into the Jangro Multi-Purpose cleaning solution (Follow the dilution guide).
  • Step 4: Mop the floor in 1-2 square metres following a grid pattern. Mop edges with straight strokes and a figure-of-eight pattern on the rest of the section, turning the mop frequently. The floor should be fairly dry on completion.
  • Step 5: Replace the mop head and solution as required throughout the cleaning process.
  • Step 6: On completion, remove the final mop head and place in the laundry bag. Clean and dry all equipment, storing tidily in a secure storage area, segregated according to colour-coding where appropriate.
  • Step 7: Remove and dispose of single-use gloves, apron and other protective wear. Thoroughly wash and sanitise your hands-on removal of gloves. Remove warning signs when the area is dry.
Note: For spillages on a carpet, clean the affected area thoroughly using either Jangro Odour Neutraliser or Micro Clean. If appropriate use a steam cleaner or a carpet extraction machine. The recommended laundering and steam cleaning temperature is 70°C.

Hand washing

Hand washing is vital to prevent person to person transmission. It must be actively encouraged. Staff, children and visitors should have easy access to liquid soap and paper towels. You may want to go hands-free and install an Autofoam Soap Dispenser and a foot-operated bin to prevent recontamination of hands.

Guide to cleaning following an outbreak

Once the outbreak is over, approx 72 hours after the last case, then a thorough environmental deep clean is required.

The deep clean will involve door surfaces, handles and skirting being cleaned. Carpets, large soft furnishings and chairs will need to be steam cleaned. Wash curtains on the highest temperature setting that the fabric can withstand. Use separate colour-coded equipment and disposable cloths when cleaning.

Process of Cleaning:

  • Table tops where dust collects
  • Door handles and edges
  • Floors
  • Toilet facilities; including edges of doors, door handles, light switches etc
All areas need to be damp dusted with Jangro Multi-Purpose Cleaner, followed by Jangro Cleaner Disinfectant or Jangro Virucidal Cleaner. This removes dust and remnant virus particles. Soiled Carpets should be steam cleaned or at least shampooed. Use Jangro Multi-Purpose Cleaner as a carpet pre-spray treatment.
