Lockable Cleaning Trolleys: For the NHS, Healthcare and Other Public Services
Recent NHS advice recommends the lockable storage of cleaning chemicals particularly on cleaning trolleys.
The NHS has issued an alert after recording 17 incidents and one death, over the course of just a year, where patients had ingested cleaning chemicals.
The response of the NHS stresses existing guidance on storage and emphasises the importance of considering several factors in assessing risk to both staff and patients when using chemicals.

One such recommendation is to bring this alert to the attention of all appropriate managers, staff, specialist advisors and persons undertaking COSHH risk assessments across the NHS, nursing homes and care centres, with deadlines for action to be completed by early next month:
"Many cleaning chemicals used in healthcare premises are covered by The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH, 2002) requiring that employers have a duty for the protection of employees and others that may encounter such substances.
Employers and organisations must ensure all cleaning chemicals are stored and used safely and that all staff receive training appropriate to their job role."

In most cases, the cleaning items were either left in areas easily accessible to patients in wards, bedrooms and toilets, or removed by patients from unattended and/or unsecured cleaning trollies or cupboards.
