Safety Footwear Standards - Explained

When advising our customers which safety footwear options are right for their business, we always start with recommending they make sure that their safety boots, trainers or shoes have the following label: EN ISO 2035. This EN standard has a classification system, which we go on to explain further.

choosing safety footwear
sb logo

The most basic in the safety footwear world - features a 200 joule toe cap, which will have been tested to 15kN compression force, to reduce the risk to injury and crushing of toes.

sbp logo

SB safety standard, but with the addition penetration resistance - helping to defend against sharp objects in a hazardous terrain. Popular in patrolling roles.

s1 logo

Offering basic safety protection as in the SB classification, but with the addition of closed seat region, anti-static properties, slip resistance and energy absorption, which can give prolonged heel comfort.

s1p logo

The same offering as the S1 classification, but with the added benefit of midsole protection against penetration for extra durability.

s2 logo

With the features of the S1 options, but with the added benefit of a waterproof exterior, preventing water penetration. It also offers absorption in the upper shoe for increased comfort.

s3 logo

The same offering as a S2 classified footwear, but with the added bonus of midsole protection, which can either be composite or metal based.

s4 logo

The top level of all around safety protection - meeting all of S1 safety standards, but are completely waterproof and leak-proof as well as having midsole protection, ideal for tough terrains. Often in safety wellington boot designs.

s5 logo

Building on the S4 standard, the S5 adds midsole penetration resistance to protect against sharp objects underfoot. Designed for the toughest environments, these boots are completely leak-proof and feature a cleated outsole for maximum grip in mud and debris.
